Johnny Joestar is the central protagonist of Steel Ball Run, the seventh part of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Once a brilliant young jockey, Johnny loses the use of his legs and much of his sense of purpose with them. Bitter, isolated, and convinced that his life has fallen below zero, he arrives at the greatest horse race in America with no heroic destiny in mind.

Then he meets Gyro Zeppeli.

Gyro’s mysterious Spin technique briefly causes Johnny’s legs to react, revealing a possibility he cannot ignore. Johnny enters the transcontinental Steel Ball Run aboard his horse, Slow Dancer, determined to follow Gyro, uncover the Spin’s secret, and reclaim some measure of control over his life. Entering a 4,000-mile race because an outlaw’s spinning steel ball might contain the answer to everything is extremely JoJo behavior.

Johnny is not a polished champion waiting to rediscover his confidence. He can be stubborn, selfish, suspicious, vulnerable, and frighteningly relentless. Those rough edges make his growth matter. The race forces him to trust, endure, make brutal decisions, and decide what kind of person he wants to become when victory, survival, and morality stop pointing in the same direction.

As the journey becomes increasingly supernatural, Johnny develops powers of his own. Yet the heart of his story remains personal: a fallen rider moving from despair toward agency, one hard-earned stage at a time. Steel Ball Run may cross an entire continent, but Johnny’s longest journey is the distance between negative and zero.
