Invincible follows Mark Grayson from teenage superhero rookie into the center of a sprawling universe of Viltrumites, alien wars, impossible choices, broken families, and consequences that hit considerably harder than the punches.

Invincible begins like a familiar superhero origin story. Teenager Mark Grayson finally develops the powers he inherited from his father, Omni-Man, one of Earth’s greatest heroes, and starts learning how to save people without completely wrecking his life. Then the story starts asking increasingly unpleasant questions about families, power, loyalty, violence, and what being a hero actually costs.

Created by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker, with Ryan Ottley joining early in the comic’s run, Invincible builds outward from Mark into an enormous superhero universe of Viltrumites, alien civilizations, government agencies, alternate dimensions, disastrous relationships, and heroes whose problems rarely stay solved after the punching stops. The comic ran for fifteen years, while the animated adaptation introduced the same universe to a much larger television audience beginning in 2021.

What makes Invincible stick is the contrast. The colors can be bright, the superhero names can be wonderfully ridiculous, and the world can feel like classic cape-comic comfort right up until somebody makes a choice with consequences that last for years. Mark keeps getting stronger, but the real question is whether getting stronger actually makes any of this easier.

I thought being a superhero would be simple.

Collector's Guide

Invincible gives collectors an unusually deep bench because its strongest designs belong to characters with genuinely different roles in the story. Invincible and Omni-Man make the obvious foundation, while Atom Eve, Allen the Alien, Robot, Rex Splode, Monster Girl, Battle Beast, Angstrom Levy, the Guardians of the Globe, and an expanding population of Viltrumites quickly turn a two-character display into a universe.

Comic and animated designs also give collectors meaningful visual choices without requiring separate Fan-Chises. Mark’s costumes, different Omni-Man looks, bloody battle variants, alternate-universe versions, Viltrumite uniforms, and characters introduced later in the story can all expand a shelf while remaining recognizably part of the same property.

The safest collecting strategy is probably to pick one favorite Character and remain disciplined.

This strategy has not been tested on anyone who has actually read Invincible.

Fun Fact!

Invincible once had an official crossover with Spider-Man in Marvel Team-Up #14. Years later, Skybound and Marvel actually teamed up again to reprint the issue, meaning Mark Grayson’s meeting with a certain friendly neighborhood superhero is not fan-fiction, a bootleg mashup, or multiversal wishful thinking. It happened.
