Dennou Boukenki Webdiver

Dennou Boukenki Webdiver sends Kento Yuki and transforming Web Knight Gladion into a virtual world threatened by a rogue program, blending friendship, cyberspace adventure, and glorious early-2000s mecha.

Dennou Boukenki Webdiver

Dennou Boukenki Webdiver comes from a beautifully specific corner of early-2000s futurism where the Internet was mysterious, virtual worlds were obviously going to become enormous, and the correct interface for cyberspace was a transforming robot.

Set in the year 2100, the series follows elementary-school student Kento Yuki as he enters the virtual world known as Magical Gate to rescue children trapped by the evil program Deletloss. His partner is Gladion, a heroic Web Knight capable of transforming between vehicle and fighter forms.

The story mixes friendship, computer networks, digital worlds, sentient programs, transforming mecha, and the kind of earnest cyber-adventure that could only have been born when “logging on” still sounded a little bit magical.

Also, the robot was quite literally designed to be part toy, part game controller.

Peak 2001.

Collector's Guide

Webdiver collecting revolves around its Web Knights, and that makes the property particularly satisfying for mecha fans.

Gladion is the obvious anchor, transforming from vehicle mode into fighter mode and serving as Kento’s primary partner. Dark Gladion gives that silhouette an evil counterpart, while Wyverion and the broader Web Knight roster expand the property into transformation, combination, and upgrade territory.

Good Smile’s MODEROID revival is particularly well matched to the source material because transformation and combination were always fundamental to the original toy-driven concept. Modern kits can recreate mechanics that were once tied to chunky electronic toys built around television connectivity.

The triggering Gladion and Dark Gladion kits therefore belong squarely under the same durable Dennou Boukenki Webdiver source property.

Fun Fact!

The original Webdiver toy concept was built around transforming robot toys that plugged directly into a television and doubled as game controllers. Series director Hiroshi Negishi remembered being handed the idea of “a robot as a game controller” before the main robot design even existed. The merchandising gimmick basically arrived before the anime universe did.
