Charizard

Charizard is the Flame Pokémon, a powerful orange flyer whose blazing tail and dragon-like silhouette have become unmistakable parts of the Pokémon world. It is National Pokédex entry #0006 and the final evolution of Charmander, following Charmeleon in one of the franchise’s original evolutionary families.

Built for speed, altitude, and spectacular amounts of fire, Charizard uses its broad wings to soar through the sky and unleash flames that grow hotter as it gains battle experience. Its horns, claws, long tail, and enormous wings give it the presence of a classic fantasy dragon, even when the Pokédex insists on getting technical.

Standard Charizard is officially a Fire/Flying-type Pokémon, not a Dragon-type. That famous contradiction has only made it more memorable. Mega Charizard X finally adds Dragon typing while transforming Charizard into a black-and-blue Fire/Dragon powerhouse. Mega Charizard Y remains Fire/Flying and pushes its aerial design even further, while Gigantamax Charizard turns its tail flame into a volcanic inferno spilling across its body.

Those forms expand Charizard without replacing it. The underlying identity remains the same across games, animation, cards, and collectibles: the small flame carried by Charmander has grown into one of Pokémon’s greatest icons. Charizard does not merely look like the reward for raising a starter. It looks like the reason somebody chose the Fire type in the first place.

Fun Fact

Standard Charizard is Fire/Flying despite its famously dragon-like appearance. Mega Evolution eventually gave that long-running visual argument some official backup: Mega Charizard X becomes Fire/Dragon, while Mega Charizard Y remains Fire/Flying. Both are temporary forms of Charizard, not additional stages in the Charmander evolutionary family.
