Steve Harrington may be the single greatest "I was NOT expecting this character arc" in modern television.
When Stranger Things begins, Steve looks like he is destined to be the stereotypical 1980s high-school jerk. Great hair. Popular kid. Cool car. The kind of character who usually exists to create problems for the heroes.
And then something wonderful happens.
Steve turns out to be awesome.
What makes Steve so beloved is that he grows. A lot. Over the course of the series, he evolves from self-absorbed teenager into one of Hawkins' most dependable protectors. He learns from his mistakes, takes responsibility for his actions, and repeatedly throws himself into danger to help the people he cares about.
Usually while armed with a baseball bat.
Which, somehow, keeps working.
Steve's greatest strength isn't his fighting ability, though. It's his heart. Whether he's protecting kids from monsters, offering advice, or helping terrified friends through impossible situations, Steve consistently chooses to be better than he was yesterday.
And honestly?
That's heroic.
His friendship with Dustin Henderson became one of the show's greatest surprises. What started as an unlikely team-up evolved into one of Stranger Things' most beloved relationships, turning Steve into the world's most overqualified babysitter and unofficial older brother.
Fans love Steve because he proves that redemption arcs don't have to be dramatic declarations or magical transformations. Sometimes they're just a series of good choices made over time.
Plus, the hair.
The hair deserves its own fan club.
Also... yeah... if Steve Harrington grabs a bat, you can safely assume something horrible from another dimension is about to have a very bad day.
